How many violin sizes are there? In general, there are four popular violin sizes: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 4/4. There are also different sizes in between, but they are less popular and you would need to find specific stores that make them. The purpose of having different sizes is to suit the size of the player. Many musicians start learning at a young age, so they transition from size to size. Your violin teacher can help advise you on which violin size is appropriate for you. In general, adults use the full size 4/4 violin, but you can check with your teacher.

How do I know which violin size is for me?Many musicians start at a young age so the different violin sizes are made to be suited for younger players or people with a smaller physique. Your violin teacher can advise you on which violin size is more suitable for you. In general, adults would use the 4/4 full size violin.

How do I set up my violin?Violin setup is usually explained and taught when you start violin lessons. If you do not have a teacher, here are some tips on how to get started! When you receive your violin, your violin is already set up with all the different parts. Before you play, you would need to: (1) Make sure the bridge of the violin has not tilted or shifted in position. (2) Tune your violin. This is usually taught and done by your violin teacher. Tuning is done by repositioning and turning the tuning pegs. If you are unsure of how to tune, please speak to a violin teacher. (3) With the rosin that is included with your violin, you would need to take a key or any tool-like object and make scratches on your smooth rosin. (4) Once your rosin has scratch marks, you can take your bow which is included with your violin, and turn the end of the bow to tighten the hairs on the bow. Be careful to not over tighten, for this may break your bow. Once you have tightened your bow, you must apply the rosin on to the bow by sliding the rosin on the bow hairs from bottom to top a couple of times. (5) An adjustable shoulder rest is included with your violin. This is to make placing the violin on your shoulders more comfortable. To use, take the shoulder rest and attach it to your violin from the bottom of your violin. A YouTube video tutorial of how to set up your violin will be coming soon! How do I clean and maintain my violin? In general, it is good to not keep your violin in places with variable temperature. A consistant room temperature is ideal. When you start playign your violin, rosin dust may accumulate on your violin. To clean, you can use a soft cloth to gently wipe off any dust after each use. When the violin is not in use, it should be kept in its case which is included with your violin to avoid any accidental damages.

I used the bow to try and play my violin but there is no sound. Why?Rosin needs to be applied to the violin bow in order for the violin to produce sound when the violin bow touches the violin strings. To learn how to apply rosin to your violin bow, please see the "How do I set up my violin?" FAQ.
